Photo Booth Cameras: Choose the Best One for Your Events

The standard camera in professional photo booths is the Canon EOS 2000D, a 24.1 MP DSLR that shoots for six hours straight without heating up and costs a fraction of a high-end body. Here we compare the event cameras that actually go into photo booths, with the criteria of a manufacturer that fits them every week.

The camera is quoted separately from the photo booth, because not every client needs one (360 booths record with a phone or an action camera). If you want the complete kit assembled and tested, ask us for a quote.

Why Choosing a Good Camera Matters

The camera decides whether the shot looks good in a dimly lit venue at two in the morning, which is exactly when the booth gets used most. These are the factors that really change the result:

  • Image quality: ideally cameras with at least 12 megapixels for sharp photos and quality prints.
  • Capture speed: at events with many guests, a fast camera avoids waiting times.
  • Integration capability: it must be compatible with the photo booth software so that effects and filters work flawlessly.

Our Recommendation: Canon DSLR Cameras

We use Canon DSLR cameras in all our photo booths for their excellent performance and reliability. They deliver exceptional image quality and fast capture speed, ideal for weddings, parties and corporate events.

  • Superior quality: sharp, detailed images, even in low light.
  • Durability and reliability: designed to withstand continuous use.
  • Easy integration: compatible with most photo booth software.
  • Speed and performance: fast focus and continuous shooting for a smooth experience.

Recommended Canon Models

  • Canon EOS 2000D: the most used camera in professional photo booths for its balance of image quality, reliability and cost. It is the one we fit in most of our models: the Magic Mirror, the Vintage Premium, the Neon Vintage and the compact Miniglam.
  • Canon EOS 800D (Rebel T7i): great price-to-performance balance, 24.2 MP sensor and an easy-to-use interface.
  • Canon EOS 90D: 32.5 MP sensor and 4K recording, ideal for large, high-demand events.
  • Canon EOS 6D Mark II: full-frame with exceptional low-light quality, perfect for weddings and night events.

Professional Event Cameras: What Changes Against a Home Camera

An event camera works in conditions a household camera never sees: 300 or 400 shots in one night, shifting venue light, bounced flash every few seconds and strangers brushing past the tripod. That is why endurance decides the purchase, not the megapixel count.

What we look at when fitting a photo machine for events: a shutter rated for high actuation counts, mains power instead of batteries (an AC adapter avoids a battery swap halfway through the wedding), USB tethered shooting from the software and a bright short-focal lens, 18-55 mm, that fits a group of six at a metre and a half.

  • Mains power with an AC adapter: no stops for battery changes.
  • 18-55 mm lens for groups of up to 6 people at 1.5 m.
  • Tethered USB shooting, driven by the photo booth software.
  • External bounced flash, never the built-in one.

Buying the Complete Event Photography Kit

An event setup that prints is three pieces: the booth, the camera and the printer. Each one is bought separately and each one has its own price, so the figure on a photo booth page covers only the cabinet, the screen and the software.

The combination that leaves our workshop most often is a Canon EOS 2000D with a DNP DS-RX1HS printer (960 €), which prints a 10x15 cm photo in about 12 seconds. If you want photo strips and more speed, the DNP DS620 (1,399 €). The compatible booth models are on buy a photo booth, and they can all integrate a Canon camera and a DNP printer (conditions apply*).

Frequently Asked Questions

What camera do professional photo booths use?

Professional photo booths mount Canon DSLR cameras. The most common is the Canon EOS 2000D for its value and reliability; higher-end booths use bodies like the EOS 90D or the 6D Mark II for more demanding events.

What Camera for a Photo Booth Should I Buy?

A Canon DSLR, and specifically the EOS 2000D with the 18-55 kit lens. Search for camera for photo booth or canon photobooth and that is the body you will keep finding, because it focuses fast in low indoor light, survives thousands of shots a season and every booth software recognises it over USB. If you are looking to buy a photobooth machine complete rather than just the body, we quote the booth and the camera together (optional, subject to conditions*). Note that carnet photo cabins, the maquinas foto carnet you see in shopping centres, use fixed document sensors and are a different product.

Is a webcam or a phone good enough for a photo booth?

Not for professional results. A webcam or a phone camera gives less sharpness, worse low-light performance and a poorer experience. A DSLR makes the difference in photo and print quality.

How many megapixels does a photo booth camera need?

With 24 megapixels (what the Canon EOS 2000D offers) you have plenty for sharp photos and quality prints. Beyond that, extra resolution only helps at very large events or for demanding crops.

Can you change the camera in a photo booth?

Yes. Our photo booths are compatible with most Canon DSLR bodies, so you can swap or upgrade the camera as your needs change. If in doubt, see our photo booths for sale and we will advise you.

Why is the Canon EOS 2000D so popular in photo booths?

Because it delivers real DSLR quality (24.2 MP sensor), it is very reliable in continuous use throughout an event and it is affordable. That balance has made it the de facto standard in the industry.

Which Camera Is Best for a Photo Booth if I Am Starting Out?

A Canon EOS 2000D with an 18-55 mm lens, an AC adapter and an external bounced flash. That covers weddings, communions and corporate events. Moving up to a 90D or a 6D Mark II makes sense when you work very large venues or shoot product photography alongside the booth.

Can I Use a Mirrorless Camera Instead of a DSLR?

You can, if the software supports it over USB and it can run on mains power. The practical drawbacks are overheating in long sessions and battery life: entry-level DSLRs are still more forgiving over 400 consecutive shots.

What Camera Does a Party Photo Machine Use?

The same as a wedding booth: a Canon DSLR with an external flash. What changes between a party and a wedding is the pace of use, so keep spare paper and keep the camera plugged into mains power.

Do Passport Photo Machines Use the Same Camera?

No. Passport photo booths in shopping centres use fixed industrial camera modules calibrated for the standardised document framing. An event photo booth uses a DSLR with an interchangeable lens because it has to cover groups and full-length shots.

Can I Buy the Complete Event Photography Kit?

Yes. We prepare the booth, the Canon camera and the DNP printer assembled and tested, though each piece is quoted separately: ask us for a quote and we will put the complete setup together with training.
