Photobooth-App Alternative for Professional Operators

Photobooth-App, at photobooth-app.org, is a genuinely free open source project led by the German developer known as mgrl on GitHub. It costs 0 €, runs on Linux and Raspberry Pi as well as Windows, serves a web interface to the guest browser, and has extensive technical documentation including a wigglecam and a 3D printed booth. Checked on their GitHub repository on 28 August 2026.

Price settles nothing in this comparison: 0 € wins that line every time. The question is what you are buying when you pay, and whether your business needs it.

Free Is a Real Price, and Sometimes the Right One

Photobooth-App costs nothing, ever, and the source is on GitHub so nobody can raise the price, change the terms or shut it down on you. For a maker, a club, a school, a wedding you are building for a friend or an office party, it is the correct answer and we would recommend it over paying anybody, including us.

The documentation is unusually good for a project this size, the Raspberry Pi route is well trodden, and the printed booth designs mean you can build the whole thing yourself. If you enjoy that work, this is a great weekend.

  • 0 €, open source, hosted on GitHub, checked 28 August 2026.
  • Runs on Linux and Raspberry Pi, on Windows, and serves a browser interface.
  • Wigglecam and a 3D printed photo booth are documented.
  • No mobile app, no managed cloud, and no 360 mode published.

What Self-Hosting Actually Costs in Hours

The software is free. The build is not. Count the pieces honestly before you start: a Raspberry Pi or a PC, a camera and its drivers, a trigger, a printer that cooperates with Linux, the network setup at each venue, and the evening you will spend when something updates and stops working.

For a hobby project that is the fun part. For a business, the hours have a price, and it is usually more than a subscription. You can probably build it. The question is whether the third Saturday in a row of debugging a printer driver is where your time earns the most.

Snap360App vs Photobooth-App, Side by Side

Snap360App prices checked on our own pricing page on 28 August 2026: 24,99 €/month or 239,99 €/year (19,99 €/month) on PLAN PRO, and 36,99 €/month or 359,99 €/year on DIAMOND PRO, which adds simultaneous TV output, more AI frame credits, multiple devices and 15 GB of cloud. Photobooth-App is 0 € with no licences at all, and the table below is about what differs beyond the price.

Nobody to Call at 23h on a Saturday

This is the line that separates a hobby from a business. Open source has no commercial support and no service level agreement. If the booth stops working in front of 150 guests at a wedding you have been paid to cover, your options are the community, the documentation and yourself.

A paid vendor has outages too, but there is somebody whose job it is to answer, and a company that loses money when you leave. When you are quoting a client 600 € for a night, the software fee is small next to the cost of the night going wrong.

Why a Raspberry Pi Cannot Run a Spinner

Photobooth-App does not publish a 360 mode, and the architecture explains why. A 360 booth puts the camera on a rotating arm above the platform, which means the recording device has to be small, battery powered and physically on the arm. That means a phone or a GoPro; a Pi wired to a mains socket under a table cannot do it.

So the format itself decides the software. Snap360App runs on the device that is already spinning: iOS 13 or later, Android 7 or later, with GoPro support, offline recording, slow motion and ramping, vertical output with music, intros and outros, and delivery by QR, AirDrop, WhatsApp, Instagram or email. If your next booking is a spinner, that is the shape the software has to take. It is at snap360app.com.

Run Both: The DIY Booth and the Paid Spinner

These two rarely compete for the same job, and plenty of operators use exactly this combination. Keep the self-hosted Pi booth for the classic print station, where you control everything and the software costs nothing, and pay for the app on the spinner where the format demands it and the client is paying a premium for the video.

It also gives you a useful hedge. If one setup fails you still have a working booth in the van, which is worth more on a Saturday night than any feature on either side of this table.

Stay With Photobooth-App If This Sounds Like You

If you enjoy building things, you run occasional events rather than a business, you want full control over your own data on your own hardware, or you are running a community or school project with no budget, Photobooth-App is the right choice and no subscription improves on 0 €.

Pay for software when a failed night costs you a client, when you need 360, when you need it working from a phone with no laptop or Pi in the setup, or when the hours you spend maintaining it are worth more spent selling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Photobooth-App Really Free?

Yes. It is open source software published on GitHub with no licence fees and no paid tiers, checked on 28 August 2026. The project is led by a German developer known as mgrl. What costs money is the hardware you build it on and the time you spend building and maintaining it.

Can I Run a Business on Open Source Photo Booth Software?

Some people do, successfully. The trade offs are real: no commercial support, no service level agreement, and every problem at a venue is yours to solve on the night. If your events are paid work with a contract behind them, price the risk of a failed night against the cost of a subscription before deciding.

Does Photobooth-App Support 360?

They do not publish a 360 mode. The architecture points away from it: a spinner needs the camera on a rotating arm, which means a phone or a GoPro rather than a Raspberry Pi wired to mains power. For 360 you need software running on the device that spins.

Why Pay for Software When a Free Version Exists?

Only pay when the difference earns its keep. In practice that means 360 support, working from a phone with no Pi or laptop in the setup, offline recording, GoPro cameras, a managed cloud gallery, and someone to call on a Saturday night. If none of that changes what you can sell, stay on the free one.

Can I Use Both a DIY Booth and Snap360App?

Yes, and it is a sensible combination. Keep the self-hosted Pi booth for the classic print station where you control everything, and run Snap360App on the spinner where the format needs it. It also means you always have a second working setup in the van, which is worth a lot on a busy weekend.

How Much Does Snap360App Cost and Is There a Trial?

PLAN PRO is 24,99 € a month or 239,99 € a year, which is 19,99 € a month, with unlimited events and no per event fee. DIAMOND PRO is 36,99 € a month or 359,99 € a year. The trial unlocks every feature with a watermark on the videos and no card required, at https://snap360app.com/.

Is There a Free 360 Photo Booth Software?

Not a complete one that we could verify. Photobooth-App is free and open source, but it does not publish a 360 mode and it runs on a Pi or a PC rather than on the device spinning on the arm. The closest thing to free 360 software is a trial: Snap360App unlocks every feature with a watermark on the videos until you subscribe, with no card.

What Is a Photo Booth App, Compared With Self-Hosted Software?

A photo booth app is installed on a phone or tablet from the App Store or Google Play, updates itself and stores events in a cloud dashboard, so the tablet on the arm is the whole setup. Self-hosted software such as Photobooth-App runs on a machine you build and maintain, with the data on your own hardware and no vendor in the loop. The first buys you time and support, the second buys you control and costs 0 €.

Subscription, Lifetime Licence or Open Source: Which Costs Less Over Three Years?

Open source wins on licence cost at 0 €, and loses on hours. A perpetual desktop licence costs more up front and usually charges again for major upgrades. A subscription such as Snap360App at 239,99 € a year is 719,97 € over three years, with every update and the support included. Price the three against the number of paid events you run, and against what one failed night costs you.
